FAQS

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that allows individuals to gain official qualifications based on their existing skills and knowledge. It recognizes that learning can occur through various avenues, not just formal education. So, if you have acquired skills and knowledge through work experience, life experience, or volunteer work, RPL provides an opportunity to have those skills assessed and accredited. An RPL assessor will evaluate your evidence and assess whether your skills and knowledge meet the required standards for the qualification you seek.

What is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)?

A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is a business or institution that is officially registered and authorised to deliver and assess nationally recognized qualifications. These qualifications are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and hold national recognition. RTOs must adhere to the standards set out in the 2015 Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), which govern their operations, processes, and quality of training. Regular audits are conducted to ensure RTOs comply with these standards.

What are Training Packages?

Training Packages are comprehensive sets of learning resources, competency requirements, credentialing, and assessment criteria that are tailored to specific industries, sectors, or enterprises. They are designed to meet the needs and skills required by particular industries or job roles. Training Packages include units of competency that outline the skills and knowledge required to successfully perform a specific task or job. Completing a training program based on these packages leads to the attainment of nationally recognized qualifications that are accepted across Australia.

What are nationally recognized qualifications?

Nationally recognized qualifications are certifications, diplomas, or degrees that are recognized and accepted across all states and territories in Australia. These qualifications are aligned with the national standards outlined in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Upon successful completion of a training program or assessment, individuals receive a qualification that is symbolised by the “Nationally Recognized Training” logo. This logo acts as evidence that the qualification has met the required national standards and is widely accepted.

What are the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015?

The Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 is a set of guidelines and requirements that RTOs must adhere to when delivering training and assessment services. These standards cover various aspects of an RTO’s operations to ensure the quality and consistency of training outcomes. They include requirements for learning and assessment practices, recordkeeping procedures, staff qualifications, financial processes, privacy, and confidentiality. RTOs are subjected to regular audits to assess their compliance with these standards and maintain the integrity of the training they provide.

What is USI?

A USI, which stands for Unique Student Identifier, is a unique number or code assigned to students in public schools. This identifier enables state education agencies, districts, schools, collegiate institutions, researchers, and others to efficiently and reliably monitor, track, organise, and transfer student records.

How do I get a USI?

Obtaining a Unique Student Identifier (USI) is fast, simple, and free. To create your USI, just follow the steps outlined below. You can also learn how to create a USI on behalf of another individual.

  1. Visit the USI Registry System and have a valid form of ID ready.
  2. Agree to the terms and conditions (if you have previously agreed to the terms and conditions, you might not see this step).
  3. Choose the “Create USI” option.
  4. Select the appropriate evidence of identity document from the provided options.
  5. Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your ID. If you use a different name for business or official purposes, you can enter it in the preferred name field.
  6. Provide your contact details, including at least two contact methods.
  7. Confirm your identity using the ‘Documentation Verification Service’ (DVS) employed by the USI Registry System.
  8. Set a USI password and select security check questions to secure your account.
Will I be awarded a certificate upon course completion?

Certainly. Upon demonstrating competency, you will receive a qualification accompanied by an academic transcript that outlines each unit you have successfully completed, along with your corresponding grade.

Is it necessary to 'pass' in order to obtain a certificate?

The assessment revolves around assessing your competency rather than pass or fail criteria. It is determined whether you possess the requisite skills, knowledge, and attitudes to perform a specific task or assume a designated role. If further training is needed, it will be recommended.

If I already have skills and experience, do I need to complete a course to obtain a certificate?

No, many organisations provide the option of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) to acknowledge individuals with prior expertise and knowledge.

Is there an age limit for pursuing further education?

Vocational training welcomes individuals of all age brackets, providing an inclusive learning opportunity for everyone.

What is the reason behind the variation in fees charged by different training companies?

Given that training organisations operate as businesses, they retain the autonomy to determine the pricing structure for their courses. The fees generally correspond to factors such as the duration of classroom instruction, the venues utilised, and additional considerations such as available resources. Nonetheless, in cases where the course is delivered under a financed arrangement, the participant price is consistent across all companies, irrespective of the chosen provider.

Do the courses remain the same regardless of the training company chosen?

While the competency requirements and the significance of the qualification remain unchanged, there can be variations in certain aspects when it comes to different training companies. These potential differences may encompass:

  1. The selection of specific units comprising the qualification.
  2. The methodologies employed for training.
  3. The expertise and capabilities of the trainers.
  4. The venues or locations where the training is conducted.
  5. The methods used for assessments.
  6. The financial arrangements or funding options.
  7. The time required to successfully complete the qualification.
What does it mean to be 'competent'?

To be ‘competent’ means having the necessary skill set, knowledge, and attitude to carry out a specific job or duty effectively and proficiently.

What steps can I take if I am unable to locate a course?

By staying in touch with us, you can stay ahead of the curve and be the first to learn about any newly launched courses.

Is there government funding available for individuals seeking to pursue a course?

The availability of government funding for individuals enrolling in courses varies based on the specific funding programs in place. Certain programs, like new apprenticeships, require applicants to meet specific eligibility criteria that take into account factors such as their career history. If you are interested in learning more about the funding options that may be applicable to the course you are considering, it is recommended to contact our team for detailed guidance and information.

What should I do if I have a complaint about a training company?

If you have a complaint about a training company, it is recommended to first contact the specific training company directly. This allows them the opportunity to address your concerns and possibly alleviate any fears you may have. Alternatively, you can reach out to the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), which oversees training quality. They can be contacted through their website at http://www.asqa.gov.au/complaints/complaints.html. Additionally, there is a National Training Complaints Hotline established through collaboration between the Commonwealth, state, and territory governments to handle such issues.

Is it possible for me to select my own training company?

Certainly, you have the option to choose your preferred training company. However, if you are enrolling as an apprentice or trainee, it is advisable to consult with your employer before making a decision on a training provider. Your employer may already have existing agreements with specific companies. If you have any inquiries or if there’s any topic related to our organisation that you would like to discuss, please feel free to contact us.

Who will assess my prior learning?

The task of evaluating your prior learning will be assigned to a qualified and certified teacher or instructor with expertise in the subject matter and teaching the course. They will assess your level of learning based on the stated learning objectives of the course.

What is the maximum number of course credits that can be obtained through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process?

Through the RPL process, individuals participating in a program have the potential to receive up to 100% credit for their prior learning and experience. There are no limitations or restrictions in terms of the number of courses that a student can seek credit for through RPL.

What should I do if I am unable to locate my previous academic qualifications?

In such a situation, you can initiate a request for duplicate copies of your credentials by reaching out to the educational institution where you completed your studies. They will guide you through the process to obtain the necessary documentation. However, if retrieval of your original qualifications is not feasible, the assessing authority may ask you to provide alternative evidence that demonstrates your competency in the subject matter.

How can I determine the units for which I can receive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

To identify the units, you are eligible for credit in Lumiere Academic Solution’s RPL Skills Assessor will contact you after you submit the required documents. If you are familiar with the unit requirements, you can specify the units you wish to apply for RPL in Part 2 of the application. This will aid the RPL Skills Assessor and speed up the application process.
